Water – Our Lifeline
We have different relationships to and stories about water: how it has saved or defeated us. How it reminds us of family vacations, outdoor adventures, or the hot summers of our childhood. How it might also symbolize a place we’ve left behind, or a location we dream to go. For day three, we want to see your interpretation of water β how might your image reveal more about you?
The prompt also asked us to shoot in different orientations. Whilst flicking through my photography folders I noticed that 99% of the time I shoot horizontally! I don’t know why, but to me it just works better. I can capture more of the area, especially when taking photos of landscapes. However, I will remind myself next time to experiment more and perhaps surprise myself with the result.
My interpretation of water can be seen in these two photos of the Grand Harbour in Valletta. It’s not just ridiculously beautiful to look at, it also provides a lifeline to Malta’s growth and economy. It used to be an important stop on several trade routes, especially with the opening of the Suez Canal in the 19th century and nowadays cruise ships dock on a daily basis in summer.
Personally, I could not live somewhere without the sea. I feel free when I look out to the ocean and see nothing but water and the horizon. Hence the name for my blog:
I FOLLOW ISLANDS π
PS: Never been to Malta? You’re missing out! Check out my guide to Malta’s “Silent City”Β and fall in love with this stunning island.
Now, that’s quite impressive!

Thank you! Standing in Lower / Upper Barrakka Gardens and seeing the massive harbour and all the ships is something you cannot describe in words. I think “feeling on top of the world” comes closest to it though π

I have a friend whose aunt lives in Malta so she goes over there quite often. She told me how nice it was over there and I’ve wanted to go ever since! It looks so pretty… Damn you, Mel! You make me want to leave the country and travel so badly!! Xx

Haha, that’s great! Keep up that desire to travel and very soon you can embark on your own adventure π I only started in 2007 a little bit and then properly in 2012 at age 27! So you’ll have plenty of time π But seriously, Malta is amazing. I still have so many photos to put up and information to share about this gorgeous island. If you love sun, sea, fireworks, architecture, history and great food then you definitely have to go. Maybe wait until you’re 18 – there’s a casino as well! :p xx

I typically shoot horizontally as well… never struck me as odd until you said you like landscapes.
I’m the same way. There’s gotta be a correlation.

I think so, too, we are on to something! π it just makes sense to not capture landscapes vertically, because all you’d get is a lot of sky (most of the times) !

I love the sunshine on that second photo, the way it sparkles off the water is beautiful.

Thanks Laura, it’s one of my favourite Malta photos actually. It takes me right back to that gorgeous sunny day in February! π
